Single-Channel Compressor, Switchable Optical and FET Voicings, Hand-Selected 12AT7 Tube in the Optical Path, Variable Threshold Ratio Attack and Release, Blend Control for Parallel Compression, Switchable VU Meter, XLR and 1/4 in I/O, 1U
The ART Solo VLA is a single-channel compressor offering switchable optical and FET voicings, with a hand-selected 12AT7 tube in the optical signal path and a blend control for parallel compression. Compression reduces the distance between the loudest and quietest parts of a signal, but how it does that determines whether the result sounds natural or deliberate. Optical and FET circuits sit at opposite ends of that spectrum, and having both in one rack space means the choice is made per source rather than per purchase. A blend control on top of them turns the unit into something neither topology offers on its own.
The optical voicing controls gain with a light source and a light-sensitive resistor, while the FET voicing uses a field-effect transistor as a fast variable resistor. Optical elements respond slowly and recover in a programme-dependent way, which produces the unhurried levelling that suits vocals, bass and full mixes, and it is very hard to make it sound wrong. A FET can clamp a transient in a fraction of a millisecond, which flattens a drum hit aggressively and produces the forward, in-your-face character associated with rock and pop production. Switching between them on the same source, at the same settings, shows the difference far more clearly than any description can.
A variable blend control mixes the compressed signal back against the untouched original inside the unit. That technique, known as parallel compression, lets an engineer apply very heavy gain reduction to raise the quiet detail in a performance while the dry signal preserves every transient at full strength. Doing it conventionally requires a mixer, two cables and a matched pair of paths, which is why it usually stays confined to a digital audio workstation. On a drum bus, a blended setting brings up room ambience and ghost notes without softening the attack of the snare, and on a vocal it adds density without the sound of the compressor working.
Variable threshold, ratio, attack and release controls sit alongside a bypass switch and a VU meter that reads either gain reduction or output level. Attack decides how much of a transient escapes before the gain begins to move, which is why a slower setting keeps a snare's crack intact while still controlling the body behind it. Release decides how quickly gain returns, and setting it too short on sustained material is what produces audible pumping. The bypass switch matters more than it looks, because comparing processed against unprocessed at matched level is the only reliable way to know whether the compression is actually helping.
Frequency response covers 20 Hz to 80 kHz within 1 dB, total harmonic distortion stays below 0.02 percent typical, and dynamic range exceeds 100 dB across the audio band. Input impedance is 10 kilohm and output impedance is 47 ohm, with balanced XLR and 1/4 in on both sides and a switchable +4 dBu or -10 dBV operating level so professional and semi-professional equipment are both accommodated. Noise measures -99 dBu A-weighted in the +4 dBu setting and -107 dBu in the -10 dBV setting. Backlit function switches make the front panel readable in a dimly lit control room or on a stage.
Both compressors share the optical detector and a 12AT7 tube, and both run from a rack. The two-channel Pro VLA III adds a second channel, stereo linking, dual mono operation and simultaneous metering of input, output and gain reduction across two rack spaces, which is what a stereo mix bus or a two-source session needs. This single-channel version answers a different question, adding a FET voicing and a parallel blend control that the larger unit does not carry, in one rack space. A producer working on one track at a time gets two compressor characters and parallel compression built in, which is a more useful set of options than a second channel that stays idle.
