The Rode NTG4+ is the battery-augmented evolution of the NTG4 — the same bright-tuned, digitally-switched supercardioid shotgun, with a built-in rechargeable lithium battery added inside the body. That single change opens up every DSLR, mirrorless camera, consumer camcorder, and field recorder that lacks P48 phantom power. Plug the XLR into a phantom-capable input and the NTG4+ draws phantom; plug into a non-phantom input and the onboard battery takes over automatically. 150+ hours per charge covers multi-day shoots without a recharge, and a Micro-USB port refills the battery from any wall adapter or laptop in roughly 2 hours. Documentary boom operators, indie filmmakers, on-camera podcasters, and ENG reporters get the broadcast-clean dialogue capture of the NTG4 with none of the phantom-power limitations of the camera side.
The internal rechargeable lithium battery is the headline change. Charge it in roughly 2 hours via the body-mounted Micro-USB port, and the mic runs for 150+ hours of continuous use before another charge — easily a week of full shoot days. A battery status LED on the body shows charge state before you leave for location. The mic does NOT take AA batteries — there is no battery door to open, no fresh cells to source, no chance of a depleted pair ruining a take. Plug, shoot, recharge overnight, repeat. For productions that swap between phantom-capable mixers and DSLR cameras, the battery is a permanent backup that lives in the mic.
The NTG4+ senses whether the XLR input it's connected to supplies phantom power. If P48 is present, the mic draws phantom and the internal battery sits idle (no battery drain on phantom-fed sessions). If phantom is absent, the battery takes over automatically with no user toggle, no menu, no audible glitch. That makes the NTG4+ a true universal shotgun: hand the same mic to a sound mixer running a Sound Devices bag rig, hand it to a one-person crew shooting on a mirrorless body with a 3.5mm-to-XLR adapter, and it works in both environments without reconfiguration.
Three digital pushbuttons on the body store the 75 Hz high-pass filter, the -10 dB pad, and the +6 dB high-frequency boost in firmware. Set them once for the shoot and they hold position even when the battery dies, recharges, or switches between phantom and battery operation. Older analog shotguns used recessed sliders that work loose mid-shoot — a stray brush against the boom-pole, the HPF is suddenly off, the take is ruined. The NTG4+ ends that failure mode. Engage the 75 Hz HPF for outdoor work, the -10 dB pad when shooting loud SFX, and the +6 dB HF boost the moment a deadcat windshield goes on the mic to compensate for the smoothed top end.
The NTG4+ capsule keeps the bright tuning of the NTG4 — a presence lift around 5 kHz pushes talent voices forward in busy location ambience without a post-EQ pass. 16 dBA equivalent self-noise captures soft dialogue, library-quiet interior scenes, and room tone cleanly without the hiss that gives budget shotguns away. 135 dB maximum SPL handles loud SFX, gunfire blanks, and drum-room work without internal clipping. 200-Ohm balanced output on 3-pin XLR runs 50-foot cable to a sound-mixer bag with no high-frequency loss.
The 10.9-inch line-gradient interference tube delivers a tight supercardioid lobe that captures the voice while traffic, HVAC, crowd murmur, and off-axis room thin out behind it. At 6.5 oz, the NTG4+ is short enough to stay out of frame on lightweight gimbal rigs where a 16-inch broadcast shotgun gets clipped, and light enough to balance on a DSLR or mirrorless cold shoe without a fluid head. The matte black anti-reflective aluminum body disappears into front-of-camera and boom-overhead positions.
First-time documentary shooters and indie filmmakers running a DSLR or mirrorless camera body that doesn't supply phantom power. Upgraders moving from a consumer shotgun to a true broadcast-grade short shotgun without the workflow of carrying a separate phantom box. ENG reporters, wedding videographers, on-camera podcasters, and YouTube creators who need broadcast-clean dialogue from a camera-mount or boom-pole position regardless of whether the camera supplies phantom. Anyone who already owns the NTG4 and wants the same character without the phantom-power dependency. Plug in, set the switches, start rolling.
