Zoom ZSG-1 Features:

  • HIGHLY DIRECTIONAL PICKUP — a super-cardioid shotgun pattern points at the subject and rejects sound from the sides, so dialogue and interviews stay clear of off-axis noise.
  • BACK-ELECTRET CONDENSER CAPSULE — a 14 mm condenser element captures crisp, detailed voice and sound effects across a 50 Hz to 20 kHz range.
  • PLUG-IN POWERED, NO BATTERIES — the mic draws plug-in power from the camera or phone jack, so there is nothing to charge and nothing to forget.
  • SHOCKMOUNT AND WINDSCREEN INCLUDED — the bundled SMM-3 shockmount isolates handling and camera noise while the WSM-3 windscreen cuts wind and breath.
  • LIGHT ENOUGH FOR ANY RIG — at about 40 grams the ZSG-1 rides a mirrorless camera, a DSLR, or a smartphone gimbal without weighing down the setup.

Zoom ZSG-1: On-Camera Sound That Beats the Built-In Mic

The Zoom ZSG-1 is an on-camera shotgun microphone that upgrades the thin, echoey audio a camera or phone captures on its own. A camera's built-in mic hears everything equally, which is why hallway echo and street noise swamp the voice; a shotgun mic points at the subject and hears mostly that. Its super-cardioid pattern focuses tightly forward and rejects sound arriving from the sides, so an interview or a piece to camera comes back clean. The back-electret condenser capsule adds the detail and presence that a tiny onboard mic simply cannot. For a run-and-gun creator, it is the fastest way to make video sound as good as it looks.

Directionality Where It Matters

The whole point of a shotgun is rejection, and the ZSG-1's super-cardioid design keeps the camera pointed at the story while the mic keeps the audio there too. Off-axis sound from the sides and behind the camera drops back in the mix, so a subject a few feet away sits forward and intelligible. A 50 Hz to 20 kHz response captures both the warmth of a speaking voice and the detail of ambient sound effects when you want them. That focus is what separates usable location dialogue from a wash of room tone. It is the difference between footage you can cut and footage you have to re-shoot.

Ready to Shoot, Nothing to Charge

Simplicity is a feature on a moving shoot, and the ZSG-1 draws plug-in power from the camera or smartphone jack rather than a battery. There is nothing to charge before a shoot and nothing to die halfway through one. The included SMM-3 shockmount cradles the mic to isolate it from camera handling, lens motors, and bumps that would otherwise travel up the shoe. A WSM-3 windscreen slips over the capsule to tame wind gusts and breath on outdoor takes. Everything needed to mount and protect the mic is in the box.

Light Enough to Live on Your Rig

Weighing roughly 40 grams, the ZSG-1 adds almost nothing to a mirrorless camera, a DSLR, or a smartphone gimbal. It rides in a cold shoe and connects with the included 1/8-inch stereo cable, feeding the camera's mic input directly. Because it is so light and self-powered, it can stay mounted as a permanent part of a run-and-gun kit. A vlogger, an interviewer, and a documentary shooter all benefit from having better sound bolted on and ready. It is the kind of accessory you set up once and stop thinking about.

Who the ZSG-1 Is For

The ZSG-1 is built for vloggers, interviewers, and video content creators who need clean on-camera audio without a wireless system or a boom operator. It suits the solo shooter capturing dialogue, a walk-and-talk, or environmental sound effects for an edit. Mounted on a phone or a compact camera, it turns a casual setup into one that sounds deliberate. For the remote-interview creator shooting in unpredictable locations, its directionality is a safeguard against noisy rooms. It is a small, dependable upgrade that pays off in every clip.
