RPB486

Rolls RPB486 Features:

  • SIX INDEPENDENT PHANTOM CHANNELS: delivers +48V regulated phantom power to six condenser microphones at once
  • LINEAR POWER SUPPLY: a linear supply produces ultra-clean, low-noise phantom for critical recording
  • XLR IN AND XLR OUT PER CHANNEL: female XLR input and male XLR output on every channel pass audio straight through
  • DC-BLOCKING OUTPUTS: pull-down resistors and isolation caps block stray DC from downstream gear
  • LED IN-USE INDICATION: front-panel LEDs confirm phantom power is active on the channels in use
  • SINGLE RACK SPACE: adds phantom power to any six-mic rig in a compact 1U chassis

Rolls RPB486 Phantom Hex: Clean +48V for Six Condensers

The Rolls RPB486 Phantom Hex is a six-channel phantom power supply that delivers clean, regulated +48V to as many as six condenser microphones from a single rack space measuring 19 by 1.75 by 2.5 inches. It exists for a common recording and live-sound gap: a mixer, interface, or splitter that lacks phantom power, or lacks enough of it, for a bank of condenser mics. Each channel has its own XLR input and XLR output and its own regulated +48V feed, so six microphones can be powered independently through one box. A linear power supply keeps the phantom voltage quiet, and isolation capacitors on every output block stray DC from reaching downstream gear. For any rig that needs phantom power added cleanly to several channels, the RPB486 is a dedicated, purpose-built solution.

Six Independent Regulated +48V Channels at 14 mA Each

The RPB486 provides six independent channels of +48V regulated phantom power, each able to supply up to 14 mA of current, well within what standard studio condenser microphones draw. Phantom power is the +48V that condenser microphones need to run their internal electronics, sent up the same balanced XLR cable that carries the audio. Because each channel is independent and regulated, powering one microphone does not sag the voltage feeding the others, which keeps every condenser operating at full specification. Fourteen milliamps per channel is generous headroom for the vast majority of condensers, including power-hungry large-diaphragm models. For a multi-microphone setup where a shared or marginal supply would leave some mics starved, six independent regulated channels keep them all solid.

Linear Power Supply for Ultra-Clean Phantom

The RPB486 uses a linear power supply rather than a switching design, which is the reason its phantom voltage is exceptionally clean. A linear supply converts AC to the required DC without the high-frequency switching that can inject noise into sensitive microphone circuits, so the +48V feeding each condenser stays quiet. That matters because any noise on the phantom rail can find its way into the audio, especially on high-output condensers in a quiet room. Running from 120 VAC mains, the internal linear supply is built for continuous install and studio duty. For engineers who chase every last bit of noise out of a signal chain, a linear phantom supply is a meaningful upgrade over powering condensers from a noisy shared rail.

XLR In, XLR Out, and DC-Blocking Protection Per Channel

Each of the six channels has a female XLR input and a male XLR output wired pin-2-hot, with pull-down resistors and isolation capacitors on every output to block DC from passing downstream. The XLR-in, XLR-out arrangement lets the RPB486 sit inline between a microphone and a mixer, adding phantom to a channel that has none. The isolation capacitors ensure the +48V stays on the microphone side and never reaches an input that cannot tolerate DC, protecting downstream gear. An LED in-use indicator shows at a glance that a channel is active and powered. For live splitter and snake feeds, or a recording rig where phantom must be added without risking the console, that inline, DC-blocked design is exactly what installers rely on.

For Interfaces, Multitrack Rigs, and Condenser Banks

The RPB486 is aimed at anyone who needs to add phantom power to gear that lacks it: mixers and interfaces without +48V, digital multitrack and DAW recording rigs, live-sound splitter and snake feeds, and broadcast or podcast setups running banks of condenser microphones. At about 4 pounds in a slim single rack space, it mounts alongside the rest of the signal chain and quietly does its job. Because it powers six channels independently, one box covers a full array of condensers rather than one or two. Its linear supply and DC-blocking outputs make it safe and clean enough for professional recording. For a rig that has outgrown its built-in phantom power, the RPB486 is the six-channel answer.
