The Rode WS8 is a deluxe windshield engineered for small-diaphragm condenser microphones built on the 0.79 in (20 mm) body platform — the NT5, NT55, NT6, M5, and TF-5. It pairs an acoustically transparent faux-fur outer layer with an open-cell foam inner surround, sealed at the rear by a rubber base ring. The result is a single accessory that handles outdoor wind, vocal plosives, and capsule moisture exposure without darkening the high-frequency air detail buyers paid for when they bought the pencil condenser in the first place.
A bare foam windscreen catches turbulent air at the front of the capsule, but on most slip-on designs the rear of the microphone stays open. Wind enters behind the diaphragm, hits the capsule from inside the windscreen, and reads on the recording as low-frequency rumble that no high-pass filter cleans up cleanly. The WS8 closes that loophole. A molded rubber base ring seats against the back of the capsule mount and seals the rear envelope. Once the WS8 is on the mic, air cannot get to the diaphragm from any angle.
The outer layer is acoustically transparent artificial fur — long fibers that diffuse incoming turbulent air before it can reach the foam underneath. The inner layer is open-cell foam that absorbs whatever low-velocity airflow makes it past the fur and doubles as a pop filter against P and B plosives at close speaking distance. The dual-layer geometry is the same reason hard-shell blimps work: break up the airstream at one radius, absorb the residual at a tighter radius. The WS8 does it in a slip-on form factor that costs a fraction of a Rycote softie and packs into the small front pocket of a camera bag.
The WS8 is sized for microphones with a 0.79 in (20 mm) diameter and a 1.06 in (27 mm) capsule depth. Every Rode small-diaphragm condenser the WS8 was designed for — the NT5 premium pencil pair, the NT55 with interchangeable capsules, the NT6 separated capsule head, the M5 matched pair, and the TF-5 cardioid pair — is built on that 20 mm platform. Third-party SDCs that share the 20 mm body, such as the Behringer C-2, fit as well. Microphones with larger bodies — the Oktava MK 012 at 23 mm, for example — exceed the rubber-ring stretch and should use a wider windshield.
An SDC stereo pair leaves the studio more than the average vocal condenser. Drum overheads on a covered porch, choir mics at the altar of a sanctuary with HVAC airflow, string quartet recording at a garden wedding, ENG location work between interior and exterior shots — every one of those workflows hits the capsule with air the studio never tested. The WS8 keeps the recording clean. At 0.63 oz (18 g) it adds no meaningful weight to a shock-mounted overhead, a stereo bar XY pair, or a boom-arm-mounted ENG rig. The 3.94 in (100 mm) outer diameter keeps the windshield off camera and off the next microphone on the same bar.
The WS8 is a moderate-wind windshield. Long-form reviews note that very low-velocity airflow — 3 to 5 mph breezes that read as bass thump on a bare capsule — still register on some recordings as faint low-frequency rumble after fitting the WS8. For dedicated gale-force outdoor work, a Rycote blimp or full softie is the correct tool. For everything between dead-still indoor air and a gusty outdoor stage, the WS8 is the accessory that turns a studio pencil condenser into a location-ready microphone.
The WS8 slips over the capsule from the front, seats on the rubber base ring, and stays in place during stage handling without any adhesive or shrink-fit step. Removal is just as fast for storage. The 100 mm outer diameter compresses against the foam layer when packed alongside other accessories in a camera bag or microphone case, so two windshields take up roughly the same volume as a paperback book. Each microphone in the bundled M5 matched pair gets its own WS8 — both mics on the bar are protected from the same air at the same time, with no scramble to share a single windshield between two capsules.
