Rode WS-Chroma: Put the Mic In the Shot, Then Make It Disappear
The Rode WS-Chroma is a set of two colored foam windshields for the RODE VideoMic NTG, supplied in blue and green so the microphone can be removed from your image with chroma key compositing. It answers a problem every solo shooter knows well: the closer the mic gets to the talent the better it sounds, but the closer it gets, the more likely it is to creep into frame. The WS-Chroma lets you stop hiding the microphone and start keying it out instead.
How Chroma Keying Removes the Windshield
Chroma key compositing works by telling software to make a specific, uniform color transparent, the same principle behind a green-screen background. The WS-Chroma applies that idea to the windshield itself. Its foam is dyed a saturated, even blue or green that keying tools can cleanly isolate, so you can drop the windshield into the top of the frame, mask out that color, and leave the shot looking as if no microphone was ever there. Two colors are included so you can match the key to your setup: green for the classic green-screen workflow, blue when the scene already contains a lot of green or when a blue key separates more cleanly.
Better Sound by Getting Closer
Microphone distance is the single biggest factor in how a voice sounds on camera. Every time the mic doubles its distance from the source, the direct sound drops and the room and background noise take over, which is why keeping a mic just out of frame so often means settling for thin, roomy audio. Because the WS-Chroma is designed to be keyed away, you can bring the VideoMic NTG right up to the edge of the shot, or even into it, capturing a fuller, more present voice with far less room tone. The foam still does windshield duty while it is there, taming light air movement and softening the plosive bursts from P and B sounds.
