Rode VXLR: The Simple Bridge From 3.5mm to XLR
The Rode VXLR is a female 3.5mm TRS mini-jack to male XLR adaptor for connecting microphones and sources with a 3.5mm output to a recorder or mixer with XLR inputs. It is the small, essential piece that lets consumer-style 3.5mm gear talk to professional XLR equipment, doing one job simply and reliably. When your mic ends in a mini-jack but your recorder wants an XLR, the VXLR is the bridge between them.
What a Passive Adaptor Does, and What It Doesn't
The VXLR is a passive adaptor, meaning it contains no electronics and no power of its own; it simply routes the audio contacts of a 3.5mm TRS plug to the corresponding pins of a 3-pin XLR connector. The signal it passes is unbalanced, carried on a single audio conductor and a ground, exactly as it arrives from the 3.5mm source. Because there is nothing to alter or amplify the signal, the VXLR is sonically transparent, passing your audio through unchanged. It is the most direct possible connection between the two formats.
The One Thing to Check First: It Does Not Pass Power
The single most important thing to know about the VXLR is that it does not pass phantom or plug-in power. Many small microphones, including the Rode VideoMicro, rely on plug-in power delivered through their 3.5mm connection, and the standard VXLR cannot supply it, nor can it convert the 48V phantom power an XLR input provides. For those powered microphones, Rode makes two alternatives: the VXLR+ converts phantom power down to plug-in power, and the VXLR Pro adds a balancing transformer as well. Use the standard VXLR for sources that are already self-powered, such as dynamic microphones and line-level devices with a 3.5mm output.

This is the adaptor for anyone who needs to feed a 3.5mm audio source into XLR equipment without adding power or processing.
