The Rode PG1 is a pistol grip shock mount for cold-shoe microphones, a handled suspension cradle that lets you lift a shoe-mounted shotgun or stereo mic off the camera, isolate it from vibration, and place it exactly where the sound is. Anyone who has recorded with a camera-mounted mic knows the twin frustrations it creates: every bump of the camera transmits into the audio, and the mic is stuck pointing wherever the lens points. The PG1 solves both at once, turning a fixed on-camera mic into a mobile, low-noise sound tool.
The PG1 cradles the microphone in a suspension within a pistol-grip handle, and that suspension is what makes it more than a handle. Handling noise and mechanical shock, the thumps of your hand adjusting grip, footsteps traveling up a boom, the camera being touched, are low-frequency vibrations that travel through solid contact into the mic body and print as rumble. The suspension mechanically decouples the microphone from the grip, absorbing that vibration before it reaches the capsule, so what you record is the sound in the air, not the noise of the rig being handled.
The PG1 is built to work either in the hand or mounted, thanks to a 3/8-inch thread on the base of the grip. Held, it gives run-and-gun operators a comfortable, isolated way to aim a shotgun mic at a subject independent of the camera. Threaded onto a boompole, it becomes an overhead boom rig for interviews and dialogue; threaded onto a microphone stand, it becomes a stable fixed position for a scene. One accessory covers handheld, boom, and stand workflows, so your mic goes wherever the shot needs it.
A detail that separates the PG1 from a plain grip is its cable management: a channel runs along the spine of the grip to capture and secure loose microphone cable. That does two useful things at once. It keeps the cable from dangling into the frame or catching on gear, and it stops the cable itself from slapping and transmitting noise into the suspended mic. The result is a tidy rig where the one path from mic to recorder is controlled and quiet.
The PG1 accepts microphones with a standard cold-shoe foot, making it an ideal solution for the Rode VideoMic and Stereo VideoMic as well as other cold-shoe-mounted shotgun and stereo microphones. If your mic normally clips into a camera's accessory shoe, it drops into the PG1 the same way, immediately gaining suspension isolation and the freedom to be positioned anywhere, on or off the camera.
The PG1 is for the videographer, documentary shooter, and content creator who uses a shoe-mount mic and needs cleaner audio and more flexible placement than a camera hot-shoe allows. For the newcomer, it is the accessory that reveals how much handling noise a camera-mounted mic was quietly adding. For the working shooter, its handheld, boom, and stand versatility plus integrated cable management make it a genuinely useful part of a run-and-gun kit. It takes the mic you already own and lets it do far more.
