Rode NTG8 Features:

  • 22-INCH INTERFERENCE TUBE: Extreme length delivers long-distance reach and razor directionality
  • ULTRA-LOW 8 dBA SELF-NOISE: Resolves faint, distant sound other shotguns bury in hiss
  • RF-BIAS WEATHER IMMUNITY: Records through humidity and condensation outdoors without dropout
  • HIGH 97.5 mV/Pa OUTPUT: A strong signal needs little preamp gain for a clean floor
  • RF-SHIELDED XLR CONNECTOR: Rejects interference from phones and wireless transmitters
  • SM8 SHOCK MOUNT INCLUDED: Long-mic suspension with integrated cable management

Rode NTG8: When You Have to Capture Sound From Far Away

The Rode NTG8 is a broadcast-grade RF-bias long shotgun microphone built for extreme reach, with a 22 in (559 mm) interference tube and an almost unbelievable 8 dBA self-noise floor. This is not an on-camera mic or a general-purpose boom; it is a specialist tool for the moments when you cannot get close to the sound, when the subject is across a field, down a sideline, or in a tree line, and the audio still has to be clean and present. Where reach and reliability outrank portability, the NTG8 is the microphone that brings distant sound home.

Why a Longer Tube Reaches Farther

A shotgun's directionality comes from its interference tube, and length is the lever that controls it. As sound enters the slots along the tube, off-axis waves arrive out of phase and cancel; the longer the tube, the more effectively that cancellation works and the lower in frequency it stays effective, which narrows the pickup pattern into a tight forward lobe. The NTG8's exceptional 22 in length gives it a far narrower pattern than a short shotgun, rejecting more of the surrounding noise and effectively reaching farther toward the subject. That tight lobe is exactly what lets it isolate a distant source from a wide, noisy environment.

An 8 dBA Noise Floor for Faint, Distant Sound

Capturing sound from a distance means capturing a quieter sound, and a quiet source is only usable if the microphone itself is quieter still. The NTG8's 8 dBA self-noise is among the lowest of any microphone, so faint, far-off audio rises above the electronics instead of being buried in hiss. Backing that up is a very high 97.5 mV/Pa sensitivity, which delivers a strong output signal, meaning you can run the preamp lower and add even less noise on the way to the recorder. Together they let the NTG8 pull a clean, present sound out of a distance that would defeat an ordinary shotgun.

RF Bias and an RF-Shielded Connector for the Outdoors

The NTG8 is made to live outside. Like Rode's other broadcast shotguns it uses RF-bias technology, charging its capsule with a radio-frequency signal so that moisture and condensation cannot create the leakage path that makes conventional condensers crackle and fail; it keeps working in humidity, fog, and cold. Rode also fits it with a custom RF-shielded XLR connector, which reduces the buzz and interference that phones and wireless transmitters can otherwise inject into a long, sensitive microphone on a busy outdoor set or a crowded sideline.

The NTG3 Capsule in a Long-Reach Body

At its heart the NTG8 shares the acclaimed capsule lineage of the NTG3, so it carries the same rich, natural voicing into a body built for distance. The trade-off of the long tube is physical: more surface area for wind to push against, which is why proper wind protection and a solid mount matter outdoors. The NTG8 ships with an SM8 shock mount designed for long shotguns, with integrated cable-management clips to keep the run tidy, a foam windshield, and a weather-resistant aluminum storage cylinder to protect the microphone in transit.

Sports, Film, and the Natural World

The NTG8 is a professional distance-miking tool. On a sports sideline or in a stadium it captures the crack of contact and on-field sound from beyond the action; in film and television it reaches subjects the boom cannot approach; and in nature and wildlife recording its low noise and tight pattern isolate a distant call from the ambient wash. Anywhere the sound is far away and has to be clean, the NTG8 is built for the job.

Who the Rode NTG8 Is For

This is for the broadcast engineer, film sound recordist, and nature recordist who needs to capture sound from a genuine distance with broadcast quality and outdoor reliability. If your work puts real space between the microphone and the source, the NTG8's extreme reach, ultra-low noise, and weather immunity make it the specialist that delivers when a standard shotgun cannot.
