The Rode NT2000 is the rare studio condenser that does the job of three microphones in one body. Where most large-diaphragm condensers commit to a single polar pattern at the factory, the NT2000 hands the engineer a continuously variable pattern dial that sweeps from omnidirectional through cardioid all the way to figure-8 — no switch detents, no preset jumps, just smooth transitions through every pattern in between. Pair that with a continuously variable -10 dB pad and a continuously variable 20-150 Hz high-pass filter, and the mic adapts in real time to whatever the session calls for: lead vocals, acoustic guitar, drum overheads, brass, or voiceover.
The pattern control on the NT2000 is the headline feature, and it does what dial-switched multi-pattern mics cannot. Sweep the dial slowly from cardioid toward figure-8 while monitoring, and the mic transitions through every blend in between — wide cardioid, near-omni, hypercardioid-leaning, super-cardioid — letting the engineer dial in exactly the pickup width and rear rejection the source needs. For solo vocals, set it at cardioid. For two singers face-to-face, sweep to figure-8 and capture both with one mic. For room sound and ensemble work, sweep to omni and lose the proximity effect entirely. One mic, every session.
The capsule is Rode's gold-sputtered dual 1-inch HF6, the same large-diaphragm design that built the NT2-A's reputation, paired with surface-mount audiophile electronics that drive the self-noise floor down to 7 dBA — quieter than the noise floor of most untreated home studios. Maximum SPL handles 147 dB before distortion, and engaging the variable pad pushes that ceiling to 157 dB, so the same mic that captures whispered ASMR-level detail also stands up to a guitar amp at full volume or a brass section at close range. Wide dynamic range, flat extension from 20 Hz to 20 kHz, and the classic Rode large-diaphragm character that flatters voices and acoustic instruments alike.
The NT2000 gives the engineer two more dials that most mics skip entirely. The continuously variable pad sweeps from 0 to -10 dB without a step switch, so loud sources can be tamed at the capsule before the signal ever hits the preamp. The continuously variable high-pass filter sweeps from 20 Hz to 150 Hz at the capsule output, trimming HVAC rumble, footfall noise, and proximity-effect bass right at the source instead of waiting for outboard EQ. Both controls live on the mic body — small frosted knobs flanking the polar pattern dial — so adjustments happen at the stand, not at the console.
The NT2000 ships with the SM6 studio shock mount, which is itself a separately-sold Rode accessory worth keeping track of. The SM6 cradles the mic in an elastic suspension that decouples it from any vibration coming through the stand — paired with the NT2000's internal shock mounting, that's two stages of isolation between the diaphragm and the floor. The integrated pop filter on the SM6 swings into position in front of the capsule, so plosives and breath blasts get caught before they hit the diaphragm without a separate filter on a gooseneck. Also in the box: the RM2 stand mount for when shock isolation isn't required, a fabric storage bag, and a dust cover for studio downtime.
Home-studio owners, voice-over artists, project-studio engineers, and singer-songwriters all face the same problem: a single fixed-pattern condenser locks them into one job, and a closet full of pattern-specific mics costs a fortune. The NT2000 solves both. First-timers get a vocal cardioid mic that doubles as an acoustic guitar mic the moment the pattern dial moves. Upgraders coming off USB condensers get the dead-quiet self-noise floor, the variable pad for screamed takes, and the variable HPF to clean up an untreated room. Comparison shoppers get the 10-year Rode warranty, the SM6 shock mount in the box, and the brass body that survives a decade of session work. One purchase, every recording job in the studio.
