Rode Blimp Extension: Long-Shotgun Reach for Your Blimp

The Rode Blimp Extension is a long-shotgun extension kit for the original Rode Blimp, adding the length needed to house shotgun microphones with barrels up to 23.6 in (600 mm), the RODE NTG8 included. A standard Blimp basket simply is not long enough for these professional interference-tube mics, and this kit closes that gap without asking you to buy a second, larger windshield. If you have invested in a long shotgun for reach and rejection, this is the accessory that lets you take it outdoors.

How the Extension Works

The kit is built around a 10.1 in (256 mm) extension tube, molded from the same acoustically transparent material as the Blimp and threaded at both ends. It joins the two halves of the Blimp basket to create one longer sealed enclosure, so the microphone still sits in a still-air pocket from tip to tail. Two sets of rigid silicone bands are supplied to grip the extra barrel length, keeping a long, front-heavy shotgun centered and stable inside the shell. Because the tube adds no reflective or absorptive surfaces of its own, the extra length costs you nothing in sound quality.

The Right Cover for a Longer Basket

A longer basket needs a longer coat, so the kit includes an extended DeadWombat artificial-fur windshield cut to sheath the full extended enclosure, along with a caring brush to keep the fur lofted. With the fur fitted, a long shotgun gets the same two-stage wind defense the Blimp is known for: the open basket holds turbulent air away from the capsule, and the fur breaks up gusts before they reach the shell. The shock isolation comes from your existing Blimp suspension, so the microphone stays protected from handling and boompole rumble even at this length.

Who the Blimp Extension Is For

This kit is for the location recordist or production sound mixer running a long interference-tube shotgun such as the NTG8 for film, wildlife, or sports and event capture, who already owns the original Rode Blimp. It requires that original Blimp system to work; it is an add-on, not a standalone windshield. If your long shotgun has been stuck indoors for lack of a windshield that fits, this is the piece that frees it for the field.
