This original Neumann product is covered by a warranty of 24 months. The warranty period begins on the date of purchase of brand new, unused products by the first end user.

Neumann KM 183-NI Features:

  • OMNIDIRECTIONAL SERIES 180 CAPSULE — the diffuse-field equalized pressure transducer captures a natural, uncolored omni image for faithful acoustic reproduction.
  • UNLIMITED LOW-FREQUENCY RESPONSE — as a pressure transducer it has no bass roll-off and no proximity effect, ideal for organ, piano, and orchestra.
  • CLASSIC NICKEL FINISH — the satin nickel body carries the traditional Neumann studio look for visible stand work.
  • VERY LOW SELF-NOISE — at 13 dB-A it stays silent behind quiet passages and handles up to 140 dB SPL without distortion.
  • TRANSFORMERLESS, LONG CABLE FRIENDLY — the low-impedance output drives runs up to 300 meters without transmission loss.
  • READY OUT OF THE BOX — it ships with a windscreen and an SG 21 bk stand-mount swivel.

Neumann KM 183 (Nickel): The Faithful Studio Omni

The Neumann KM 183-NI is a small-diaphragm omnidirectional condenser microphone from the Series 180, finished in classic satin nickel. Its diffuse-field equalized pressure-transducer capsule is voiced for faithful reproduction rather than added color, so it hands back the room exactly as it heard it. As the omni member of the Series 180, it sits alongside the cardioid KM 184 and the hypercardioid KM 185, sharing their state-of-the-art transformerless electronics. The nickel finish is the traditional studio livery, identical in sound to the matte black KM 183 mt.

The Strengths of a Pressure Omni

Being a true pressure transducer gives this microphone behavior a directional mic cannot match. There is no low-frequency roll-off, so bass extends without limit, and because it does not respond to pressure gradient, there is no proximity effect when it moves close to a source. Its 22 mm capsule reads off-axis sound evenly and without coloration, which keeps multi-mic setups and stereo arrays honest. What arrives at the microphone is what leaves it.

Nickel Versus Matte Black

The -NI suffix simply denotes the satin nickel version; acoustically and electronically it is the same microphone as the matte black KM 183 mt. Nickel is the classic look many engineers prefer on visible stands and in control-room video, while the matte finish is chosen for stages and film where reflections would distract. Neither choice changes the diffuse-field capsule or the transformerless head amplifier behind it. The decision comes down to appearance and where the microphone will be seen.

Where the KM 183 Belongs

That neutral character makes the KM 183-NI a natural for sources where low-frequency weight is part of the music. Pipe organ, grand piano, string sections, choir, and full orchestra all reward an omni that carries their bass intact. It excels in spaced A-B arrays and as a room or ambience microphone, capturing an open, enveloping picture of the hall. Because it colors nothing, it disappears behind the instrument it records.

Specifications and Signal Path

The specifications place it firmly in reference territory: 13 dB-A of self-noise, a 140 dB maximum SPL, an 81 dB signal-to-noise ratio, and a 127 dB dynamic range. Sensitivity of 12 mV/Pa and a 50 ohm rated impedance let it drive long cable runs cleanly, and it draws 3.2 mA from 48V phantom power over a balanced XLR 3-pin output. A frequency response of 20 Hz to 20 kHz captures the full audible band. Transformerless electronics keep distortion low and tone neutral throughout.

In the Box and Who It's For

Each KM 183-NI ships with a WNS 100 windscreen and an SG 21 bk stand-mount swivel, ready to rig from the case. It is the choice for the classical engineer, the piano or organ recordist, and anyone building spaced arrays who values honest low end and a traditional nickel finish. Studios that want a matched stereo rig can pair two, or step up to the factory-matched KM 183 Stereo Set. For faithful, room-inclusive capture in a classic body, the KM 183-NI is Neumann's reference omni.
