ART USB Dual Pre PS Features:

  • THREE WAYS TO POWER IT — bus power over USB, a 9 V battery or an external adapter keep the interface running wherever the recording happens.
  • TWO COMBO INPUTS — each channel takes an XLR microphone or a 1/4 in TRS line or instrument signal on the same jack.
  • FORTY-EIGHT DECIBELS OF GAIN — up to +48 dB with equivalent input noise of -120 dBu at maximum gain covers typical dynamic and condenser microphones.
  • ZERO-LATENCY MONITORING — a blend control mixes the live inputs against the computer playback so performers hear themselves with no software delay.
  • FIFTY-HOUR BATTERY LIFE — more than 50 hours of operation from one 9 V battery with phantom power off, and about 20 hours with it on.
  • CLASS-COMPLIANT USB — the interface appears as an audio device with no drivers to install on either major desktop platform.

ART USBDualPrePS: Two Microphone Channels That Run on a Battery

The ART USBDualPrePS is a two-channel microphone preamplifier and USB digital audio interface from the Project Series that will run on USB bus power, a single 9 V battery, or an external adapter. That third option is the one that defines the product: with phantom power switched off it records for more than 50 hours from one battery, and roughly 20 hours with phantom engaged. Most compact interfaces are entirely dependent on the computer's bus, which becomes a problem the moment a laptop battery is the scarce resource on a long location day. Being able to take the current burden off the computer turns a four-hour field session into an all-day one.

Combo Inputs and Gain Structure

Both channels use combo jacks that accept an XLR microphone connector or a 1/4 in TRS line or instrument plug, with up to +48 dB of gain and switchable +48 V phantom power. Input impedance is greater than 4 kilohm on the XLR and greater than 300 kilohm on the 1/4 in, the latter high enough to keep a passive instrument pickup sounding right rather than dull and weak. Equivalent input noise measures -120 dBu at maximum gain with channel separation better than 75 dB, so the two channels stay independent rather than bleeding into each other. Interviewers running two lavalier microphones and songwriters running a vocal and a guitar both fit the same hardware without adapters.

Zero-Latency Monitoring Explained

A blend control mixes the analog input signal directly against the USB playback returning from the computer, feeding both to the 1/8 in headphone output. Latency is the delay introduced when audio travels into a computer, through recording software and back out again, and even a small amount of it makes a singer's own voice feel disconnected from what they are doing. Splitting the monitor feed in hardware, before the computer is involved, removes that delay entirely for the live source while still letting the performer hear the existing tracks. Vocalists, voiceover artists and anyone tracking overdubs get a monitor mix they can actually perform against.

Conversion, Connections and Class-Compliant Operation

USB audio runs at 16-bit with a 44.1 kHz or 48 kHz sample rate over a class-compliant USB 1.1 connection, with two balanced 1/4 in TRS outputs and an 1/8 in headphone jack on the analog side. Class compliant means the operating system already holds the driver, so there is nothing to download, nothing to keep updated and nothing that stops working after a system upgrade, which matters enormously for a device intended to be grabbed and used. Frequency response covers 20 Hz to 20 kHz within 1 dB with THD under 0.01 percent at 1 kHz and signal-to-noise better than 90 dB. Output impedance is 600 ohm on the main outputs and 50 ohm at the headphone jack.

Built for Work Away From the Studio

A compact metal chassis, three power options and no driver dependency add up to a recording front end that fits in a shoulder bag. Documentary crews, oral-history projects, wildlife recordists and journalists all face the same problem: the session happens where there is no mains outlet and where a laptop battery has to last. Running the interface from its own 9 V cell while the computer runs from its own reserve doubles the useful window of the whole rig. Metal construction also means the unit survives the reality of being carried, set on the ground and packed away in a hurry.

Who the USB Dual Pre PS Suits

Two-microphone work away from a studio is the sweet spot, and that covers a great deal of real recording. A podcast producer records a guest interview in a hotel room, a musicologist captures a field performance in stereo, and a student records voice and acoustic guitar in a dorm without buying a larger interface. In a studio it serves as the backup interface that always works, because there are no drivers to conflict with the main system. When the requirement is two clean microphone channels, anywhere, this is a remarkably small way to meet it.
