AKG WM81 Cocoa Wire-Mesh Caps Features:

  • COCOA FOR DEEPER SKIN TONES — the concealment finish for brown hair and darker complexions that beige leaves visible.
  • PROTECTS THE MEMBRANE — screens make-up, dust, sweat and airborne debris while keeping the capsule acoustically open.
  • FIVE CAPS PER PACK — matched to how caps actually disappear, which is during costume changes rather than through wear.
  • CARDIOID 81-SERIES FITMENT — sized for the LC81 MD lavalier, EC81 MD ear-hook and HC81 MD head-worn capsule housings.
  • TAKES A FOAM SCREEN ON TOP — the W81 windscreen fits above the cap when a scene or a venue adds moving air.

AKG WM81 Cocoa Wire-Mesh Caps: Concealment and Protection for Darker Rigs

The AKG WM81 cocoa 5-pack provides five wire-mesh protection caps for the cardioid 81-series MicroLite microphones, guarding the membrane against wind and pop noise as well as dirt such as make-up and dust. AKG offers the cap in four finishes because a body microphone's finish is part of its job, and cocoa is the option for brown hair and deeper skin tones. Cardioid MicroLite microphones can be used with or without the cap, so this is an optional part that most professional users fit as standard. The pack of five is a rig-level quantity rather than a per-microphone one.

Casting, Skin Tone and Why Four Finishes Exist

Invisibility is a production requirement, not a preference, and it cannot be met with a single colour. A theatre company casting a diverse ensemble will rig microphones at the hairline and temple across a range of hair colours and complexions, and a beige cap that vanishes on one performer will read as a pale spot on another under the same lighting state. Cocoa covers the middle and darker part of that range, sitting against brown hair, a brown wig lace and deeper skin without drawing the eye from the stalls. Sound designers and wig supervisors who order caps, foam and tape in matching finishes per performer are simply solving a visual problem with the same rigour they apply to a mix, and having the darker finish available means no one is asked to wear a rig that shows.

Five Per Pack Because Caps Are Lost, Not Worn Out

The failure mode for a protection cap is rarely wear. Caps come off during quick changes, disappear into costume linings, drop through gaps in a dressing-room floor and get vacuumed out of a get-in, which is why anyone running body microphones professionally treats them as a stocked spare rather than a fixed part of a microphone. Five to a pack lets a stage manager or a sound number two replace a missing cap in the interval instead of sending a performer on with a bare capsule, and it lets a rental inventory return a microphone to a complete condition between hires. Where caps do degrade, it is normally from loading with make-up and dried perspiration residue, at which point swapping the cap restores the microphone without any intervention at the capsule itself.

Cardioid-Only Fitment and What Goes Wrong

Every MicroLite part number carries a digit pair that names the pattern family, with 81 for the cardioid models and 82 for the omnidirectional ones, and the caps are not interchangeable between them. Cardioid capsules generate their directional pattern by comparing pressure at a front port with pressure arriving through a rear acoustic path, so their housings are dimensioned around that vent, while omnidirectional capsules are smaller pressure transducers with no rear path at all. Fitting an omnidirectional cap to a cardioid microphone therefore risks obstructing the very feature that makes it directional, producing a response no amount of console work can restore. Reading the digit pair before the colour word is the whole discipline, and it takes one second per order.
