Foam Windscreens, 10-Pack, Black, Open-Cell Acoustic Foam, For LC82 MD Omnidirectional MicroLite Mics, Fits Over The WM82 Omnidirectional Wire-Mesh Cap
The AKG W82 black 10-pack contains ten open-cell foam windscreens for the omnidirectional MicroLite microphones, placed over the WM82 wire-mesh protection cap when a position needs more than the cap alone provides. AKG's guidance is to add this foam above the omnidirectional cap in demanding conditions such as a windy outdoor venue, and the screens add only a fraction to the visible size of the capsule. Black is the finish that suits the situations where an omnidirectional lavalier is meant to be seen rather than hidden, which covers most of broadcast, panel discussion and corporate stage work. Ordering the correct pattern pack matters as much as ordering the correct colour, because the 82-series parts and the cardioid 81-series parts are not interchangeable.
An omnidirectional MicroLite capsule is a pressure transducer with a single front port, and because it does not compare front and rear pressures it is inherently more tolerant of a gust than a directional capsule of the same size. What it is not tolerant of is a port that has been partially blocked or a sustained draught pushing directly into that port, and both of those produce the same symptom of a lavalier that sounds progressively duller and noisier through a long event. Foam addresses the airflow half of that problem by converting fast-moving air into slow-moving air across a maze of interconnected cells, which lets the acoustic wave through largely unaltered while stripping out the pressure gusts riding on it. On a panel microphone six inches below a talker's chin, the difference shows up first on hard consonants and on any position sitting under an air-conditioning outlet.
Most concealed body microphone work reaches for beige or cocoa, but a very large share of professional lavalier use is deliberately visible, and that is where a black screen is correct. Broadcast news and talk formats mount the microphone openly on a lapel, panel events clip omnidirectional capsules to dark suits and dark shirts, and podcast and streaming setups leave the microphone in frame as part of the look. In all of those the black finish reads as intentional equipment rather than as a mistake, and it also hides against dark hair when a microphone is rigged to a collar or a headband. Choosing black in those contexts avoids the odd effect of a beige screen glowing against a dark jacket under studio lighting.
Conference technicians live a different life from theatre wardrobe departments, and the workflow this pack supports is theirs. A single-day event may put omnidirectional lavaliers on eight or ten different speakers in sequence, each one clipped, briefed, sent on stage and unclipped within an hour, and a fresh screen per speaker is what keeps both the hygiene story and the plosive control honest without pulling microphones out of rotation to dry. Ten screens in a pack covers a typical day's programme with spares, and the mesh cap underneath stays fitted throughout so nothing acoustic changes between talkers. The same routine suits houses of worship handing a lapel microphone to a series of readers and corporate AV teams supporting a roomful of presenters.
