AKG RMS4000 Features:

  • LOCKING ON / OFF ACTION — the switch latches in position, so a knock or a brush against a costume cannot unmute a live channel.
  • 43 IN CABLE REACH — a 43 in (109 cm) lead brings the switch from a belt-mounted pack to a hand, a lapel or a pocket.
  • CLOTHING CLIP SUPPLIED — the switch clips to clothing where the wearer can find it without looking down or breaking eye contact.
  • SIX COMPATIBLE TRANSMITTERS — the DPT700, PT400, PT4000, PT450, PT4500 and PT470 bodypacks are all listed as compatible.
  • MUTES A PACK THAT CANNOT BE REACHED — the whole purpose is muting a transmitter taped, hidden or worn somewhere the wearer cannot get to it.

AKG RMS4000: Muting a Bodypack You Cannot Reach

The AKG RMS4000 is a remote mute switch for wireless bodypack transmitters, connecting through a 2.5 mm plug on a 43 in (109 cm) lead and terminating in a locking on / off switch on a clothing clip. Its purpose is precise and easily explained: once a bodypack has been taped under a costume, slipped into a back pocket or clipped inside a jacket, the mute switch on the transmitter itself becomes unreachable, and this accessory puts that function back within the wearer's grasp. AKG lists the DPT700, PT400, PT4000, PT450, PT4500 and PT470 bodypacks as compatible, which covers several generations of its analog and digital transmitter platforms. Nothing about the part is electrically clever, and its usefulness is entirely a matter of geometry. A performer who can mute at will is a performer who does not need an operator watching a fader for them.

A Locking Switch on a 43 in Lead

Two mechanical properties define how this accessory behaves in use, and the first is that the switch locks rather than springing back. A momentary switch would require holding it down, which is impossible for a performer holding a script, an instrument or a prop, whereas a latching action means the channel stays where it was put until deliberately changed, and it also means a brush against a costume or a knock during a scene change cannot silently unmute a live microphone in front of an audience. Length is the second property, and 43 in (109 cm) is chosen to reach from a pack worn at the small of the back or on a belt to a hand, a lapel or a jacket pocket, which is the distance that actually matters on a dressed performer. Supplying a clothing clip completes the arrangement, holding the switch in a known position so the wearer finds it by feel rather than by looking down mid-sentence.

Which Transmitters Accept It, and Where It Plugs In

Compatibility is stated by AKG as the DPT700, PT400, PT4000, PT450, PT4500 and PT470 bodypack transmitters, and the connection is made through the remote mute input those packs provide for the purpose. Checking the transmitter before ordering is worth a moment, because a bodypack without that dedicated input cannot use a remote mute switch at all, and no adapter changes that; the input is a designed feature of the transmitters named above rather than a general-purpose socket. AKG's documentation for the PT470 and the PT4500 both list the RMS4000 explicitly as the optional accessory for their external mute switch connector, which is the clearest confirmation available that the pairing is intended rather than incidental. Anyone specifying packs for a production where discreet muting is a requirement should therefore choose the transmitter with that capability in mind, since retrofitting it is not possible.

Where a Remote Mute Becomes Genuinely Necessary

Theatre is where this accessory earns its place most obviously, because a performer in costume has a transmitter taped somewhere inaccessible and still needs to be silent between scenes without breaking character or waiting for a fader. Broadcast contributors use it for the same reason on camera, muting between segments without visibly reaching inside a jacket, and panel discussions rely on it so that a speaker can silence a microphone between answers rather than leaving an open channel picking up the neighbouring chair. Houses of worship put it on readers and clergy who need to mute during music or prayer, and conference production uses it wherever delegates are on body-worn microphones and an operator cannot ride thirty faders at once. In every one of those settings the alternative is either an open microphone or an operator giving it constant attention, and a locking switch on a clip solves it for a fraction of the effort.
