Reference Hanging Microphone Module, DAM+ System Connector, Twist-Free 33 ft (10 m) Attached Cable, Spring Steel Hanging Clamp, Switchable LED Ring, Ring Expander Included, Powering Module Required, Capsule Sold Separately
The AKG HM1000 M is a ceiling-suspended hanging microphone module for the DAM+ system, supplied with a twist-free 33 ft (10 m) system cable, a spring steel hanging clamp and an LED ring expander. It is designed to put a capsule in the air above a choir, a stage or an audience, held by its own cable and aimed from above rather than standing on the floor in the way. The single letter M at the end of the name carries the whole electrical story: this version terminates in the DAM+ system connector and therefore needs a separate powering module, and it accepts only the Modular Plus capsule heads. Neither the capsule nor the powering module is in the box, so a complete overhead position is always a three-part order.
Two hanging modules share the HM1000 name and the difference between them is the reason both are still catalogued. The plain HM1000 carries its own in-line phantom power adapter and comes out on a standard microphone output, which makes it a self-contained overhead microphone that any phantom-powered input can run. This M version deliberately gives that up: it hands audio and indicator control to a DAM+ system connector so the powering, the output format and any switching behaviour are decided by whichever module is fitted at the other end. For a venue standardising on Modular Plus across goosenecks, tabletop stands and hanging positions, that consistency is the point, because one module type then serves every microphone in the building.
Cable behaviour is the difference between an overhead microphone that works and one that quietly stops working, which is why the supplied lead is specified as twist-free. A suspended capsule is held only by its cable, so any residual torsion in that cable slowly rotates the microphone off aim over days and weeks until the pattern is pointing at a wall instead of the choir. Twist-free construction resists that rotation, and the full 33 ft (10 m) length is permanently attached so there is no in-air joint to work loose above people's heads. Worship technical directors who have re-aimed a hanging microphone every month with a ladder recognise immediately why this detail is worth paying attention to.
Height is trimmed using a spring steel clamp that grips the cable, so the hanging distance is adjusted on the day without cutting anything or reterminating a connector. Getting that distance right is the main acoustic decision in an overhead installation: too high and the capsule collects more of the room's reflected sound than direct sound, too low and it appears in sightlines and camera shots. Because the clamp allows repeated adjustment, an installer can hang the microphone, listen, and move it twice before committing, which is far more reliable than calculating a height from a drawing. Theatre and school hall installations in particular benefit, since the same room is often used for a choir one night and a drama production the next.
Capsule heads for this module are CK41, CK43 and CK49, all from the DAM+ range and all ordered separately. The older DAM Series heads CK31, CK32, CK33, CK47 and CK80 belong to a different connector generation and will not mate with it, and the ULS heads mount only on a dedicated preamplifier body, so the shared two-letter prefix hides three incompatible systems. Picking the pattern is then an acoustic judgement about how much of the room should arrive with the source, since a broader pattern collects more of the space and a tighter one isolates a defined area beneath it. Getting the family right first and the pattern second is the order that keeps an overhead order from arriving as two boxes that cannot be assembled.
Suspending the pickup solves problems that no floor stand can. A hanging module puts nothing in a sightline, nothing in a walking route and nothing within reach of a performer, which is exactly what a chancel, a stage apron or a lecture hall floor needs when the space has to stay clear. Choirs and drama casts also move constantly, and a fixed overhead position covers an area rather than a person, so the microphone does not have to be re-aimed every time the blocking changes. Houses of worship, school auditoriums, broadcast studios collecting audience response and council chambers picking up a public gallery all end up overhead for the same reason, which is that the room simply has nowhere sensible to put a stand.
