Factory-Matched Cardioid Condenser Stereo Set, Two C214 Microphones, C414 Capsule in Each Body, 156 dB Max SPL, 20 dB Pad, 160 Hz Bass Cut, Doubled Mounts and Windscreens, Aluminum Case
The AKG C214 Matched Pair is a factory-matched stereo set of two cardioid large-diaphragm condenser microphones, each built on one half of the C414 dual-capsule system and rated at 156 dB SPL with its pad engaged. Both units are drawn from thousands of individual microphones by a computer-aided matching process that targets the highest possible correlation across the whole frequency range and virtually identical sensitivity between the two. Identical sensitivity is what allows two channels to run at the same preamplifier gain and still produce a centered, stable image instead of one that leans toward the hotter capsule. Two spider shock mounts, two SA60 stand adapters and two W214 windscreens travel with the pair in an aluminum case. It is a single-pattern stereo front end aimed squarely at drum overheads, piano and stereo instrument work.
Selection for this set is done by computer-aided measurement across a production run of thousands of microphones, choosing two units whose frequency responses correlate as closely as the process allows and whose sensitivities are effectively the same. Sensitivity describes the voltage a microphone produces for a given sound pressure, so when two microphones differ even slightly the stereo image pulls toward the louder one and has to be corrected with channel trim, which shifts one side's noise floor relative to the other. Response correlation matters just as much, because two microphones that agree on level but disagree at 6 kHz will place cymbals and string detail at different apparent distances. A recording engineer setting up spaced overheads gains an image that sits where the microphones were aimed with no corrective gain move at all.
Two SA60 stand adapters ship with this pair rather than a stereo bar, and that single detail defines how the set is meant to be used. Coincident arrays such as X/Y and Blumlein place two capsules almost touching on one mount, which needs a bar and a figure-8 pattern that a fixed-cardioid microphone cannot offer; spaced arrays instead separate the microphones by a measured distance and let arrival-time differences generate the stereo image. With a pair of adapters and two stands an engineer can set a spaced overhead pair three feet apart above a kit, flank a grand piano's low and high strings, or place one microphone at the twelfth fret and one at the body of an acoustic guitar. Drum room work benefits particularly, since the two microphones can be pushed as wide as the room allows without any shared hardware to limit them.
Capsule design in both microphones uses a 1 in (25 mm) edge-terminated single-sided element derived from one half of the C414 dual-capsule system. A dual-diaphragm capsule carries a diaphragm on each side of a shared back plate so its pattern can be switched electrically, and using only one side gives a permanently cardioid microphone that keeps the flagship capsule's tonal character while removing the pattern switching entirely. Edge termination refers to where the diaphragm is electrically contacted, at its rim rather than its center, which keeps the moving area free and helps the transient response stay clean. Two of these capsules matched to each other give a stereo pair with the same voice as the multipattern flagship in the tracking room next door, without the multipattern hardware or the pattern-selection decisions.
Switchable pre-attenuation of -20 dB on each body raises handling from 136 dB to 156 dB SPL and widens dynamic range from 123 dB to 143 dB, alongside a switchable 160 Hz bass-cut filter at 6 dB per octave. Equivalent noise level is 13 dB-A per microphone with an 81 dB-A signal-to-noise ratio, and in a stereo array the noise floor counts twice because both channels feed hiss into the same image. The 160 Hz filter point is set higher than a conventional rumble filter on purpose, so it also thins the low-frequency build-up that appears when a cardioid capsule is placed close to a drum shell or a piano soundboard. Integrated capsule suspension inside both bodies keeps stand-borne vibration from a bass drum or a stage riser off the diaphragms.
Supplied in the aluminum carrying case are two factory-matched C214 microphones, two spider shock mounts, two SA60 stand adapters and two W214 windscreens, which is a materially different accessory set from the single microphone's shock mount alone. Powering is 9 to 52 V phantom power at 2 mA per microphone through balanced gold-plated 3-pin XLR male outputs, a wide enough range that portable mixers and interfaces with under-voltage phantom supplies still run both channels correctly. Buyers who order this set rather than two singles are usually chasing the matched sensitivity and the doubled hardware in one transportable case. Drum engineers, piano recordists, choral directors, guitar tracking rooms and live capture rigs all use it for the same reason: two channels that behave identically from the moment they are unpacked.
