The Rode VideoMic Pro+ is the on-camera mic engineered for the workflow that mirrorless and DSLR shooters actually run. A broadcast-grade supercardioid condenser capsule sits inside an integrated Rycote Lyre suspension and feeds a 3.5 mm TRS output through a detachable SC8 coiled cable. Switchable gain, a two-position high-pass filter, a high-frequency boost, and a Safety Channel are all built into the rear panel — every setting that used to require post is now a click before you roll. Power is flexible: the included LB-1 lithium-ion battery runs for roughly 100 hours per charge, 2x AA covers an emergency, and continuous micro-USB power keeps long-form interviews and cage-rig builds running indefinitely. At 4.3 oz, it sits on top of a Sony Alpha, a Canon R-series, a Nikon Z, or a Panasonic GH without unbalancing a gimbal.
Run the gain switch to +20 dB at the mic and your camera preamp drops back to a low, quiet setting — the noise floor of consumer mirrorless and DSLR bodies disappears from the recording. The 0 dB position passes the capsule straight through for cameras with strong preamps. The -10 dB pad handles loud sources at close range without the capsule overloading. One switch, three completely different recording chains, and no menu diving on a camera mid-shoot.
Live interviews, run-and-gun shoots, and one-take performances all share the same risk — a sudden volume spike clips the primary track and the take is gone. The VideoMic Pro+ records a duplicate channel at -20 dB on the second TRS conductor. In post, when the spike arrives, you swap to the safe channel and recover the moment. It is the single feature that converts a "we will have to reshoot" into a usable take, and it costs nothing in workflow — it is always on whenever the mic is plugged into a stereo input.
The two-position high-pass filter rolls off at 75 Hz for general dialog scenes and 150 Hz for environments with heavy HVAC, traffic, or hand-held footfall. The high-frequency boost adds presence and intelligibility for voices in soft, deadened rooms — small home studios, hotel rooms on location, treated interview booths. Both filters operate at the mic before the signal reaches the camera, so the camera AGC never reacts to noise you have already removed. Less to fix in post, cleaner masters out of the camera.
The included Rode LB-1 lithium-ion battery delivers roughly 100 hours of runtime per charge — multiple full shoot days between top-ups. When the LB-1 is dead and there is no time to charge, 2x AA cells slot into the same compartment and run another ~70 hours. For studio installs and cage rigs, a micro-USB cable supplies continuous power straight off the camera, a power bank, or wall. The mic switches between sources automatically; the operator never has to plan around a dead battery.
The Rycote Lyre suspension is integrated into the body — no separate shockmount to assemble, lose, or break. It decouples the capsule from lens-stabilizer thump, gimbal motor vibration, and handheld camera shake at the source. Automatic power on/off detects when the cable is plugged into a live camera and wakes the mic; pull the cable and the mic sleeps. No more dead takes from a forgotten power switch, no more drained batteries on a shoot day you thought was wrapped.
If you shoot weddings, documentaries, YouTube, indie short film, or run-and-gun journalism on a mirrorless or DSLR camera, the VideoMic Pro+ is the camera-top mic that solves the three problems camera audio always introduces — noisy preamps, sudden clipping, and environmental rumble. First-time camera-audio buyers get a mic that plugs in and just works. Upgraders from the original VideoMic Pro get a longer battery life, an integrated Rycote Lyre, the Safety Channel, and the auto power feature in one package. Comparison shoppers get a 133 dB SPL ceiling, 14.2 dBA self-noise, a supercardioid pattern, and a detachable cable — the spec sheet that makes a B-cam shotgun a primary audio source.
